YMCA of Medicine Hat Announces New Building: The Y on 2nd

Medicine Hat, AB, July 4th, 2022:

The YMCA of Medicine Hat is excited to announce the introduction of a new building to our current 14 service delivery locations: The Y on 2nd.

Located at 525 2 Street SE, this new flagship building will be the hub of all YMCA Community Services in Medicine Hat, eventually including Employment Services.

This office building will allow the YMCA to continue honouring its commitment to expand Community Services. With the addition of three programs in the last six months (Alternative Suspensions, Camp Jude and Summer Aides), the Y is growing and growing fast. Medicine Hat’s historic downtown is a prime location with access to transit and proximity to many of our partner agencies.

“The community continues to experience an array of social problems that continue to grow in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic,” says Sharon Hayward, CEO – YMCA of Medicine Hat, “Many people are struggling to meet their basic needs and feel disconnected. As a charity committed to building healthy communities, the Y has grown and transformed over the last 60 years to meet the needs of the day. This new building is the next step in a new chapter for the YMCA of Medicine Hat.”

The purchase of the building was facilitated through reinvesting the proceeds from the recent sale of Camp Elkwater, which was originally listed in 2019. “We felt it was important to reinvest the proceeds from the sale of Camp Elkwater in a way that would honour its legacy and impact. The Y on 2nd will offer various community programs and services that will benefit the entire community,” says Hayward.

The Y on 2nd is planned to open to the public in the fall. Visitors there will find offices for Camp Jude, Summer Aides, Alternative Suspensions, the Before & After School Care Program, as well as YMCA Administration offices, including the CEO, HR, and accounting. The Medicine Hat branch of the YMCA Employment Services will join the new building in spring of 2023 or 2024.
