Heard the Downtown and South Ridge Y might be closing?

Here is what's really going on.

They YMCA of Medicine Hat is aware of rumours circulating that our Downtown and South Ridge branches are closing as a result of the Facilities for the Future report presented to City Council this past Monday. We want to assure our members and the public that there are no plans to close either of these facilities at this time.

The City of Medicine Hat is a close partner of the YMCA. We worked extensively with the City to provide data and insights for their "Facilities for the Future" report, that was presented to City Council this past Monday. The report outlined that the market does not and cannot support the current rec centers in their current locations – in other words, there aren’t enough people in our community for any one facility to be successful right now.

The City is in the very early stages of this project. Several things unrelated to the YMCA need to happen before this project can move forward. We want to reassure members that IF the City does eventually move forward with this plan, we will continue to work closely with them to meet the needs of the community. We have no intention of getting out of health, fitness, and aquatics services and will ensure our high-quality programs continue to be available for our members in the community.
